Crackdown is free, so you should really play Crackdown

Anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure of playing the original Crackdown can do so now at no price. In the lead-up to the launch of Crackdown 3, Microsoft has made 2009’s Crackdown free for everyone. It can be played on Xbox One through backward compatibility. Crackdown is one of those mindlessly enjoyable games that should be played at some point. It’s a lot of bounding across buildings and landing in a thick mob of armed enemies. It’s finding agility orb after agility orb because there are 500 of them. It’s the frustration of not being able to find the last few agility orbs. Looking back, it’s sort of incredible that the original Crackdown was never remastered during all those years we were waiting on Crackdown 3. Gussy up the visuals and add an orb map, and it’d fit in nicely among all the other…

Project Wingman, Ace Combat-inspired arcade flight game, looks stunning in latest VR gameplay footage

It’s been a while since our last look on Project Wingman; the arcade flight game that is powered by Unreal Engine 4 and is heavily inspired by the Ace Combat series. A couple of days ago, RB-D2 released a new gameplay video showing 10 minutes from its latest build in VR. In case you weren’t aware of, Project Wingman is an independently developed combat flight action game to be released on PC with an emphasis on fun and refined gameplay, true-to-its-roots inspirations, and an engaging single player experience. The game will feature fast-paced challenging gameplay and players will dogfight, strike, and fly through combat zones based off an alternate history of Earth. The final version will also come with 20 different aircraft and over 40 unique weapons, support for Virtual Reality headsets and extensive customizable controls. We strongly suggest watching the…

It also comes with a few simple commands to help you navigate. Critically, and in the spirit of how kids read the books back in the day, you can say…

‘Tasty!’ Check out this Mortal Kombat arcade chocolate cake

You may recall that a few weeks back we posted an article about the talented Christine McConnell, who had been commissioned by NetherRealm/Warner Bros. to create a gingerbread cake in the style of the classic Mortal Kombat dragon logo. It was a sight to behold. It seems as though McConnell – who carries the enviable resume of baker, photographer, clothing designer, interior decorator, blogger and TV show host – wasn’t finished, as she has revealed another amazing Mortal Kombat cake, only this time shaped in the form of the classic 1992 arcade cabinet. The frosted coin-op features hand-painted side-art, accurate control panel and even yer boy Raiden smashing through the display. The base is also decorated with a grisly puddle of blood and the skulls of a few hapless victims. Really impressive work, though I am kinda hungry now…You can check out more…

Have You Played… The Room?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time.I’ve never understood why The Room is called The Room and not The Box. Yes, the box is in a room, but your eyes are so drawn to this ornate toy that you don’t ponder what is happening around you. And it really is a good game about boxes: the mystery of what’s inside them, the thrill of prising one open and… er, that’s about it. But that’s arguably everything that is good about boxes. (Okay, so stamping them flat for recycling is also good fun, but that would make for quite a brief puzzle game.) The important thing, is that Fireproof do both of these things very well. (more…)

Check Out These Celebrities as Mortal Kombat Characters by BossLogic

Since Mortal Kombat 11‘s reveal a few weeks ago, there has been some hype surrounding NetherRealm’s long-running franchise. For me, a lot of that hype is due to nostalgia but also Ronda Rousey’s inclusion in the game. It’s not that the WWE Superstar and former UFC fighter is actually lending her voice to Sonya Blade but the prospect of other celebrities providing their voices to some of gaming’s most well-known characters. Artist BossLogic has taken it a step further and created some really great depictions of celebrities as Mortal Kombat characters. Seen on the BossLogic Instagram page, much of the artist’s recent work revolves around these depictions with the most recent post flaunting Michael Fassbender (Alien: Covenant, Steve Jobs) as the thunder god Raiden. Give them a look: In my mind, a lot…

Arguably one of the bigger title thus far in 2019, Resident Evil 2 is now released and the accolades are building up. (Review here). At last check, gamers on Steam Store have an overwhelmingly positive rating on the title, with positive ratings at over 96%. Essentially for those who haven’t tried the game or the 1-shot demo yet, the general consensus is that the game is a great balance between nostalgia and modern gameplay. As with usual, PC gamers can enjoy discounts of up to 25% off for both the Standard and Deluxe Edition of the game at $45 and ~$52 respectively. Cuphead Arcade Builder Creates the Ultimate Way to Experience the Game

Cuphead by Studio MDHR has done pretty well for itself having won countless awards since its release in September 2017 and also surpassing the 3 million copies sold mark which is an amazing feat for an indie title. With its family of faithful fans, it comes as no surprise that someone would want to experiment in different ways to play the run and gun game and that someone is an incredibly talented designer who built an entire cabinet from scratch and turned it into the ultimate Cuphead gaming machine. User u/Sebjansen took to Reddit to showcase their Cuphead arcade build, which unsurprising, took quite a long time to complete. Sebjansen even tries to keep things looking as authentic as possible, opting to go for the retro double coin slots and LED buttons you see in the original arcade machines. To save on costs,…

Atari ST Fan Porting Ghouls ‘N Ghosts

Retro gaming fans are cut from a different cloth, aren’t they? A game not made for a platform you want to play it on? For most of us that is a big “get over it” but for some retro gaming fans that have the skills to program, it is an opportunity. Even if there was […]

Why Guerrilla Games stubbornly built its amazing game engine from scratch

For our ongoing series ‘Fundamentals’ we’re looking at different companies worldwide and the basic principles they were built on. This time: video game developer Guerrilla Games. Guerrilla Games’ picturesque canalside office was originally intended to house 190 people, its technical director Michiel van der Leeuw tells me as he rushes through the building in search of an empty room. But the Amsterdam-based game developer has grown rapidly over the past few years, filling every nook and cranny of the place, and now it’s bursting at the seams. Next year, it plans to move uptown. Right now, its 250 employees make… This story continues at The Next Web

Bit Quest II for the Atari 2600

After the conclusion of the first Bit Quest game, the evil Baron von Darkbit turned his back on forty years of video game tradition and, instead of recapturing the Princess for the sequel, captured the Hero. In Bit Quest II it’s up to the Princess to defeat the Baron, rescue the Hero, restore peace to the land and set up the inevitable Bit Quest III, featuring a marriage counselor who must help the couple find happiness by building a strong relationship based on mutual trust and respect rather than the superficial thrill that comes from the endless cycle of abduction and rescue. To rescue the Hero, the Princess must find the four magic keys that unlock Baron von Darkbit’s castle and defeat the Baron in combat. The keys are hidden in dungeons scattered throughout the land and guarded by a variety…

Overkill’s The Walking Dead console releases put on hold, may never come out

Back when it dropped in November on PC I said that Overkill’s The Walking Dead doesn’t really know what it wants to be, and it seems as if publisher Starbreeze Studios doesn’t either. After an overwhelmingly tepid response amid a currently low playerbase (following an early shuffle into the fray due to the strong staying power of zombies and The Walking Dead brand), Starbreeze has “postponed” the release of Overkill’s The Walking Dead on consoles. Originally the plan was to update the game steadily on PC, add more episodes, then ease into an early February launch on PS4 and Xbox One with enhancements and fixes. As I said a few months ago there is a chance that Overkill could course correct and make things right by the time the console editions arrived, but now that plan is in jeopardy. According to the publisher…

Westworld Mobile shuts down following legal rift with Bethesda

Android and iOS release Westworld Mobile has announced that it is to pull down the shutters in three months time. The app has already been removed from digital storefronts, with the game’s servers going offline April 16. Players are being encouraged to spend up any remaining in-game currency. The announcement was made via a statement on Twitter by developer Behaviour Games. Although no specific reason was stated for the closure, Behaviour has recently come out of a vicious legal battle with Bethesda, who sued the developer on the grounds that Westworld Mobile uses the same source code as their own Fallout Shelter. As Behaviour Games are responsible for the creation of both titles, this was not seen as a far-fetched claim, especially when bugs identical to those found in Fallout Shelter also reared their head in Westworld Mobile. Although the case was…
