Embedi security researcher Denis Selianin has discovered a vulnerability affecting the firmware of a popular Wi-Fi chipset deployed in a wide range of devices, such as laptops, smartphones, gaming rigs, routers, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. According to Selianin, the vulnerability impacts ThreadX, a real-time operating system that is used as firmware for billions of devices. ZDNet reports: In a report published today, Selianin described how someone could exploit the ThreadX firmware installed on a Marvell Avastar 88W8897 wireless chipset to execute malicious code without any user interaction. The researcher chose this WiFi SoC (system-on-a-chip) because this is one of the most popular WiFi chipsets on the market, being deployed with devices such as Sony PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Surface laptops, Samsung Chromebooks, Samsung Galaxy J1 smartphones, and Valve SteamLink cast devices, just to name a few. “I’ve managed…
For our ongoing series ‘Fundamentals’ we’re looking at different companies worldwide and the basic principles they were built on. This time: video game developer Guerrilla Games. Guerrilla Games’ picturesque canalside office was originally intended to house 190 people, its technical director Michiel van der Leeuw tells me as he rushes through the building in search of an empty room. But the Amsterdam-based game developer has grown rapidly over the past few years, filling every nook and cranny of the place, and now it’s bursting at the seams. Next year, it plans to move uptown. Right now, its 250 employees make… This story continues at The Next Web

Rieko Kodama is widely considered as the first lady of RPGs. Having worked with Sega for nearly 40 years now, Kodama has helped bring to life such series as Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd, and Skies of Arcadia. To say her work is classic is underselling it. For the 19th annual Game Developer’s Choice Awards, Kodama-san will be receiving the “Pioneer Award” for her contributions to the industry. In a statement given to Gamasutra, GDC’s general manager Katie Stern wrote, “After decades spent developing some of SEGA’s most indelible classics, Kodama-san could easily rest on her laurels, but instead has dedicated herself to creating games that transcend gender and generations to give us countless hours of joy. This award is a ‘thank you’ to Kodama-san and all creators who work so hard to achieve greatness.” The ceremony will be taking place on…
Back in October 2018, we informed you about the Path Tracing mod for Quake 2 that could run on the new high-end gaming graphics card from NVIDIA, the GeForce RTX2080Ti. Unfortunately, though, that Path Tracing renderer could not take advantage of the RT cores, resulting in really low performance. Thankfully though, a group of people has released a new special version that takes advantage of the RTX GPUs. Q2VKPT is described as the first playable game that is entirely raytraced and efficiently simulates fully dynamic lighting in real-time. While some games have started to explore improvements in shadow and reflection rendering, Q2VKPT is the first project to implement an efficient unified solution for all types of light transport: direct, scattered, and reflected light. According to its team, this project is meant to serve as a proof-of-concept for computer graphics research and…

China is hands-down the manufacturing Mecca for a PC hardware nerd like me. So when I had the opportunity to see the magic happening first-hand I immediately packed a bag and travelled the 6,000-odd miles from the Shire-like West of England to the smog-choked Mordor of Dongguan in China to see just how such technical wonders are created. Like many PC gamers I automatically expect my expensive, complex lump of graphics processing goodness to just work, giving practically zero thought to where it’s come from or how it got here. But when I was given the chance to see first-hand the latest batch of Nvidia and AMD graphics cards being created and tested before my jet-lagged eyeballs I immediately jumped at it. And yeah, I now have a new appreciation for both the engineers who solder, screw, and test every single…

After the conclusion of the first Bit Quest game, the evil Baron von Darkbit turned his back on forty years of video game tradition and, instead of recapturing the Princess for the sequel, captured the Hero. In Bit Quest II it’s up to the Princess to defeat the Baron, rescue the Hero, restore peace to the land and set up the inevitable Bit Quest III, featuring a marriage counselor who must help the couple find happiness by building a strong relationship based on mutual trust and respect rather than the superficial thrill that comes from the endless cycle of abduction and rescue. To rescue the Hero, the Princess must find the four magic keys that unlock Baron von Darkbit’s castle and defeat the Baron in combat. The keys are hidden in dungeons scattered throughout the land and guarded by a variety…
Back when it dropped in November on PC I said that Overkill’s The Walking Dead doesn’t really know what it wants to be, and it seems as if publisher Starbreeze Studios doesn’t either. After an overwhelmingly tepid response amid a currently low playerbase (following an early shuffle into the fray due to the strong staying power of zombies and The Walking Dead brand), Starbreeze has “postponed” the release of Overkill’s The Walking Dead on consoles. Originally the plan was to update the game steadily on PC, add more episodes, then ease into an early February launch on PS4 and Xbox One with enhancements and fixes. As I said a few months ago there is a chance that Overkill could course correct and make things right by the time the console editions arrived, but now that plan is in jeopardy. According to the publisher…
GameStop reported its sales results for the 2018 holiday season, which showed the company suffering decreases to many of its top revenue generators. Hardware, software, and pre-owned sales all decreased in the 2018 season, whereas accessories and digital currency grew. The total global sales for holiday 2018 were $2.63 billion, which was a 5% decrease compared to the 2017 holiday period. But that compares the nine weeks ending January 5, 2019 to the nine weeks ending December 30, 2017, which the store notes isn’t a comparable sales period. By shifting the sales periods to end on January 5 and January 6, respectively, total store sales increased 1.5%. That includes a 3.6% increase in the US that helped offset a 3.1% decrease internationally. The company also broke down several types of revenue for comparison. New hardware sales were down 6.1%, due to the Xbox…
